Strawberry Picking: A Love Story

by autumn on June 11, 2012

I picked strawberries on Long Island this weekend and it was damn near perfect. I mean, it was raining a bit and I was on the G train before 9 am on a Saturday, but still. Perfect. I was completely floored by the amount of open space on the North Fork. I knew in an abstract sense that there was farmland on Long Island, after all that’s where my CSA is from, but to encounter that much land that was just, well, land was pretty stunning. I find that the longer I live here the more I am captivated simply by space. I drank some Gewürztraminer, came back to Queens, and made a pinboard of things to do with strawberries. Until then, pictures from the day. (Thanks to Kathryn and Emily for having me as a road-trip companion.)

Oh how I love picking strawberries in the summer! Have just come across your blog. Such pretty pics. Now I’ve got the urge to get my hands on fresh strawberries.

So inspiring! Can’t wait to see what you make with all those berries. I’m planning a strawberry picking spree on Friday and was planning to go upstate, but the open spaces of North Fork sound wonderful too.

Thanks, Elizabeth. We went upstate last year. I think with the warm spring we had, it’s a great year from strawberries.

Strawberry-picking and Gewürztraminer looks like a great way to spend a day. It’s strawberry week at la Domestique, and I’m having way too much fun doing the research. 🙂

Autumn, these photos are seriously gorgeous. Isn’t it crazy how wildly saturated red shows up on film? I can’t wait to see what you do with your strawbs!

Lovely. Strawberry season is a favorite. I just made a strawberry vanilla jam from the new Food in Jars cookbook–incredible. The vanilla bean is just perfect. I highly recommend it.

I am fascinated – you took the G train to where? And how did you get way out there to the farm? Please give directions as I’d love to do it.

Hi Patricia, Wouldn’t it be nice if the G train took us right to the strawberry patch?! Sorry to have been unclear, but that wasn’t the case. Took a zipcar out to Long Island.
